Venezuela: Opposition leader due to meet with Trump as situation remains tense

NBC News reports: “María Corina Machado… is set to visit the White House on Thursday amid speculation that she may offer Trump her [Nobel Prize] in appreciation for the U.S. military raid that deposed Venezuela’s repressive leader, Nicolás Maduro. Machado is the Venezuelan opposition figure whom the Nobel selection committee chose last year for an award that has become a Trump fixation.”

It should be noted that Machado is politically way to the right of Venezuela’s ruling regime.

Meanwhile, “Diosdado Cabello, Venezuela’s interior minister [described in the NY Times headline as ‘Maduro’s Enforcer’], is accused by U.S. prosecutors of drug trafficking and is linked to repression at home, yet remains a powerful figure.”

Semafor: “President Donald Trump went nuclear on five Republican senators for advancing a resolution that could constrain his military power in Venezuela. But Secretary of State Marco Rubio helped sideline the resolution with more subtle congressional diplomacy.”
